The Socially Responsible Agriculture Project/SRAP and its partners Sussex Health and Environmental Network/SHEN, ACLU-DE, Delaware Poor People’s Campaign and Delaware’s branch of the NAACP filed a civil rights complaint with the US Environmental Protection Agency/EPA alleging DNREC and Sussex County failed to properly inform residents in the area of the former Perdue composting facility about its proposed expansion to a biogas facility, which could potentially handle 250,000 tons of poultry waste per year from Delaware farms and neighboring states. There have been numerous environmental objections raised to the proposal, but this complaint charges DNREC and the County with not doing proper outreach to the neighboring communities. The petitioners are asking the EPA to force a restart of the permitting process for the project.
