Bryan Townsend is the State Senator for Delaware’s 11th Senatorial District (Newark-Bear), a 2016 candidate for U.S. Congress, an attorney in Wilmington, and the lucky husband of Lilianna.
A lifelong resident of Newark, Bryan graduated from the University of Delaware, where he earned undergraduate and graduate degrees. A firm believer in the importance of education, Bryan completed a master’s degree in Chinese at the University of Cambridge in England and Peking University in China, and a law degree at Yale Law School. After law school, Bryan clerked for the Delaware Court of Chancery.
Bryan decided to enter public service in 2012 because of his concern about Delaware’s public education system. Running an intense, low-cost grassroots campaign, Bryan won a September 2012 Democratic primary against the incumbent president pro tempore of the Delaware Senate. Bryan went on to win the November 2012 general election and a September 2014 primary. In the Senate, Bryan serves as Chair of the Banking & Business Committee. He also serves on the Education, Judiciary, Corrections, Public Safety, Sunset, and Veterans Affairs Committees.
In his first three years, Bryan has successfully championed legislation and efforts on a wide variety of policy issues, including education, economic development, criminal justice, drug addiction, and disability law. He currently is co-chairing a task force to identify options for cleaning up Delaware’s waterways and addressing chronic flooding.
Bryan comes from a family committed to public service. His father served for 30 years as a Newark police officer, and his mother has taught in Delaware public schools for more than 40 years. Bryan’s father grew up in Sussex County, Delaware, and his mother grew up in Newark, Delaware after spending several years living on U.S. Air Force bases around the world. In his free time, Bryan enjoys open-water swimming, reading, and traveling with Lilianna.
